Ben Folds Los Angeles Concert reviews
I have seen Ben Folds at least 10 times in the last 10 years. And I have seen him through all of his "projects" whether that was Ben Folds Live, his Nick Hornby project, his a Capella project, his symphony project, his reunion with the Five and finally his concerto and chamber music extravaganza. I am a much larger fan of him, alone, with a piano in a general admission venue. When i bought tickets to his yMusic concert, I was a little concerned that it wouldn't be as personal or spontaneous and I was pleasantly surprised. He sounded excellent, as did yMusic and he covered a few of his older favs. I will say that unless you have purchased and really invested in "So There" you will be a little disappointed. He covers almost the entire album. All in all, it was a different experience from what my favorites are, but it was an enjoyable, invigorating one of its own...which is why we all love Ben to begin with.
Amazing show! Ben Folds & company were fantastic!
Florida Theater is such a nice, intimate venue. It was the perfect setting for this show. You felt like you were part of something really personal and special. :)
I didn't realize there was an opening act but Dotan performed. I wasn't familiar with him before and rarely do I enjoy opening acts very much. But, I will say that he was amazing- performing just with one other musician, singing with the only accompaniment of acoustic guitars, a drum and a tambourine. It was simple and beautiful. And, I can honestly say that I plan to check out his CDs on iTunes.
YMusic was very high energy and amusing to watch. Their accompaniment to Ben Folds was awesome! The percussionist who accompanied YMusic and Ben Folds was fantastic! I don't recall his name but he was clearly enjoying himself so much he was enjoyable to watch. This was really a performance where you didn't just want to watch the lead performer- you really wanted to see what everyone was doing.
He was Ben at his best- doing a nice mix of old and new songs, showing his creativity and talent by making up (good) songs throughout the show to riff off of comments made by the audience and just being his awesome self. The performance was great! A good bit of audience participation. Great vocals and instrumental performances. Amusing stories. Felt like old times. :)
Ben Folds exceeded all my expectations
I purchased tickets as part of the VIP Fan Soundcheck experience and it was SO WORTH IT!! We had access to the pre-show soundcheck which was like...50 people sitting in front of the stage while Ben warmed up. He had us yell out songs and he'd play snippets of them.
The show itself was incredible - because of the VIP tickets, we were sitting in the fourth row and it felt super intimate. He has excellent stage presence and engaged the audience throughout the entire show. He also stopped and explained the story behind each song before he played it which was great.
